Scientific Name: Ephedra gerardiana

Hindi Name: सोमकल्प लता (Somakalpa Lata)  

Traditional Uses:

1. Asthma Relief: Somalata is extensively utilized in traditional Ayurvedic medicine to alleviate symptoms of asthma. It is believed to have bronchodilator properties that help in easing breathing difficulties.

2. Cough Treatment: The herb is employed in the treatment of cough, particularly in cases of respiratory distress. Its expectorant qualities are thought to aid in expelling mucus and relieving congestion.

3. Cold Remedy: Somalata is traditionally used to address common colds. Its potential antiviral and immunomodulatory properties are believed to contribute to the management of cold symptoms.

Process of Use:

1. Decoction Preparation: Create a decoction by boiling Somalata stems in water. This can be achieved by taking a certain quantity of dried or fresh Somalata stems and simmering them in water for a specified duration.

2. Inhalation Therapy: In cases of asthma or respiratory issues, inhaling the steam of Somalata decoction is recommended. This can be done by covering the head with a cloth and leaning over the steaming decoction.

3. Herbal Tea: Another method is to prepare a herbal tea using Somalata. Boil the stems in water, strain the liquid, and consume the herbal tea. This is beneficial for addressing cough and cold symptoms.
