    Introduction:

Chamomile is also known as Blue Chamomile or German Chamomile. This is an annual aromatic herb that attains a height of 60 to 90 cm. The plant has a multi-branched characteristic with small leaves, which are slightly hairy and divided into minute lobes. The petiole of the plant is hollow from inside while green leaves cover the external surface. It is also very popular for its fragrance, mainly a pungent and sweet odor, because of which it has widespread use not only in herbal medicine but also for cooking purposes.

Chamomile belongs to the family Compositae. It is one of the largest families of flowering plants commonly known as 'composite' flowers, as it consists of a cluster of flowers arranged together to form a single bloom-like appearance. The plant produces minute flowers that have prominent white outer petals with yellow discs in the middle, hence very recognizable

    Availability and Natural Distribution:

Chamomile originally belonged to Europe and Western Asia, although it has now been introduced as a cultivated plant in many parts of the world. In Nepal, chamomile has been grown mainly on the lower plains of the Terai, especially between 500-1800 m altitude. Lower plains of Nepal are treated as the best for its cultivation, where the soil and climate conditions are appropriate. It requires well-drained soil and plenty of sunshine; thus, the southern parts of Nepal act as a suitable place for its cultivation.

Because of its increasing usage in herbal products, beauty products, and herbal teas, there has been a high demand for Chamomile in Nepal. Though it does not grow wild, lately cultivation has been spreading, and farmers have started recognizing its economic importance.

Time of Harvesting and Parts Used in Trade:

Harvesting Time: Flowers can be picked thrice a year, which brings a successive supply to the farmers. First, harvesting normally commences from March (Falgun) onwards and has two rounds of harvesting after the growth cycle of a plant. It is experienced in Nepal that the yield improves with staggered harvesting, enabling continuous production during the growing season.

Part Used in Trade: The most valued part of the Chamomile plant is its flower from which essential oil is extracted. Chamomile oil is variously known as Blue Chamomile oil due to its medicinal value; it is among the major reasons Chamomile is under cultivation.

    Description of Traded Part:

The Chamomile flower is 1.3 to 2.5 cm in diameter. The white colors belong to the outer petals, while the bright yellow color belongs to the middle part, carrying the disc florets. These flowers have a very sweet and distinctive aroma; this partly explains their popularity in cosmetic and herbal products. Even in the dried state, the flower of Chamomile maintains its fragrance, which again is highly desirable in the manufacturing of teas and extraction of essential oils.

The oil extracted from its flowers is full of therapeutic compounds, mainly azulene responsible for giving this oil a characteristically blue color. This oil is very strong and concentrated with anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antibacterial characteristics. For that reason, Chamomile oil is considered to be utilized in different sectors, beginning with beauty or skincare and reaching to food and beverages.

    Uses, Properties, and Benefits:

Chamomile is highly acknowledged for its extensive usage on various aspects, among them:

Production of Essential Oil: Chamomile produces the most valuable product; essential oil in high demand in cosmetic and beauty industries. The oil from Chamomile is extracted for use in lotions, creams, shampoos, and soaps, thus gaining its reputation through its calming effects. It reduces inflammation on the skin, also treating eczema and maintains healthy skin.

Culinary Use: Chamomile flowers are used to prepare Chamomile tea, which is globally popular for its calming nature. Chamomile tea is prepared and drunk worldwide for its stress-releasing property that promotes smooth digestion and hence a good sleep. Its light flowery taste is really liked all over the world, and people drink it as herbal infusion before sleep. These flowers are sometimes used in chocolates and baked items for their flavoring effect in adding a subtle flower note.

Medicinal Value: Chamomile has been used both internally and externally for ages for its varied medicinal benefits. It can be used to cure insomnia, anxiety, gastrointestinal problems, and skin diseases. The herb owes much of its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antiseptic properties to the presence of flavonoids and terpenoids. Its topical application can give relief in burns, rashes, and insect bites. It is used internally to relax the stomach, reduce menstrual cramps, and induce sleep. Skin Care and Beauty Products: Chamomile is one of the major and very common ingredients in skin care products because of its gentle nature, which suits even sensitive skin. It soothes irritation, thus reducing redness and sometimes even hastening the process of healing. Chamomile extract is added to hair care products like shampoos and conditioners to nourish the scalp and promote healthy hair growth.

Herbal Medicine: Chamomile is a major player in herbal medicine because of its properties. It finds its uses in Ayurveda and Chinese medicine mostly because of its anti-inflammatory and sedative effects. Chamomile works very well with nervous disorders brought about by stress, problems in the digestive tract, and skin-related diseases. Chamomile is an excellent herb for conditions involving anxiety, nervousness, and sleep disorders because it has a calming effect. It is anti-inflammatory, hence useful in arthritis pain, reducing spasms of muscles, and soothing irritated tissues.

    Conservation Status or Commercial Importance:

Although Chamomile is not an endangered species in Nepal, it carries a lot of commercial value. Due to high demand in the global market for Chamomile oil and its derivatives, there has been an increased number of Chamomile cultivations. Profitability in cultivation has encouraged farmers in Nepal to take to Chamomile farming. More scope is seen in this sector. Essential oil from flowers of chamomile fetches high prices in the international market, which is out-growing more demand for beauty and health sectors.

It is expected that with natural and organic products increasing in demand, Chamomile oil will continue to be on the rise. Because of this, Chamomile becomes one of the very lucrative crops among Nepalese farmers, especially for those areas where other commodities cannot prove that lucrative. Chamomile farming, besides its economic benefits, aligns well with sustainable agricultural practices because the plant requires very minimal pesticide use and grows best on well-drained soils.

In short, Chamomile is a multi-purpose and valuable herb for various industries, including medicine, cosmetics, and foodstuffs. Its cultivation is not only a financially appealing option for farmers but also a healthy product for consumption. Its value as a commercial crop will continue to increase as the demand for natural products globally continues to surge.
