Aconite, Aconitum spicatum and Aconitum ferox, are two
species of herbs traded from Nepal. The name "Aconite" indicates
something highly poisonous, although it has traditionally been used in
medicines. The rhizomes of both the species are very toxic; they must be
subjected to special processing before being used for medicinal purposes. They
are used primarily as an antidote for treating animal bites and poisoning
cases.
Aconitum ferox is a perennial herb growing up to 1 m tall.
The leaves are round in outline, palmately lobed, the lobes once or twice
divided and themselves margins toothed. It bears dark blue flowers from
September to October, borne in clusters.
Aconitum spicatum, however reaches the height of 2 meters.
The leaves are deeply divided, its flowers are of bluish purple color, which
blossom in the month of September to October. It has the biggest rhizome
amongst the Aconite genus.
Availability:
Aconitum ferox is found at an altitude of 2100 to 3800
meters, mainly in the Eastern and Central Nepal.
Aconitum spicatum is more widely distributed from 1800 to
4200 meters in Eastern, Central and Western Nepal.
Time of Collection:
The species can be best collected between October-November.
During this time the rhizomes-that are the main traded part-are dug out.
Traded Part:
Rhizome (root).
Description of Traded Part:
The rhizome of Aconitum ferox is 10 to 20 cm long and 1.5 to
3 cm thick, with fine roots developing from it. It usually comes in dark brown
color. Aconitum spiccatum has the biggest rhizome among the species belonging
to Aconite genus.
Uses and Properties:
The rhizome of the two species is highly toxic. It is used
after special preparation as an antidote, especially against animal bites. The
root is too toxic to be taken directly. It is processed and then given in
measured doses according to the traditional and Ayurvedic system of medicine.
In the Aconite genus, the rhizome of Aconitum spicatum is said to be the most
poisonous.
Specific uses of Aconite in Nepalese traditional medicine
include, among others:
Anti-poisonous medication against snake bites and scorpion
stings
For pain relief, externally used to alleviate pain resulting
from joint and muscle conditions, provided it is processed properly
High fever reduction: In some conditions, a small dose is
believed to reduce high fever when other remedies fail.
Nevertheless, Aconite needs to be handled very cautiously
because it has lethal qualities. Just a minute quantity of unprepared Aconite
is capable of seriously harming or killing a person.
Conservation Status:
The Government of Nepal has prioritized this herb for
cultivation and conservation because of its high medicinal value and restricted
availability. It is endangered due to overharvesting and habitat loss;
therefore, efforts are being made in the direction of sustainable farming and
its inclusion in conservation programs.
Conclusion:
Aconite occupies an important place in the traditional
herbal medicine system of Nepal for both its healing potential and its
dangerous toxicity. The plant, which grows at altitude, is equally a treasure
to the medical fraternity and a responsibility for the conservationist. While
the strong medicinal properties of Aconite have made this plant a vital herb in
Nepalese culture, handling and using this plant has required expert knowledge
so that no harm is caused. It is sustainable harvesting together with further
conservation efforts which will provide this precious herb to future
generations while sustaining ecological balance.
