परिवार: Combretaceae

परिचय:

बर्रो नेपालमा पाइने एउटा महत्वपूर्ण औषधीय वनस्पतिक रूख हो, जसको उचाइ ३० देखि ४० मिटरसम्म पुग्न सक्छ। यसको बोक्रा गाढा

    खैरो फुस्रो हुन्छ भने काठ हल्का पहेँलो रंगको हुन्छ। बर्रोको पातहरू लामो, फराकिलो, हाँगाको टुप्पोमा झुप्पोका रूपमा हुन्छन्। असोजदेखि कात्तिकसम्म यसमा पहेँलै फुल फुल्छ, कात्तिकदेखि माघसम्म फल लाग्छ।

    उपलब्धता:

    बर्रो नेपालको पूर्व, मध्य, पश्चिम भागका ३०० देखि ११०० मिटरको उचाइमा सालको जंगलमा पाइन्छ। यी रूखहरू समुद्री सतहदेखि मितेरी रूपमा हुने भएकाले यो विशेष रूपमा सालका जंगलहरूमा प्रचुर मात्रामा पाइन्छ। नेपालभर यसको व्यापक रूपमा खेती हुने कारण यो स्थानीय व्यापारको पनि एक महत्वपूर्ण हिस्सा हो।

    संकलन समय व्यापारमा प्रयोग हुने भागहरू:

    बर्रोको फल मङ्सिरदेखि फागुनसम्म संकलन गरिन्छ। यसको फल गोलाकार हुन्छ, जसको व्यास . देखि से.मी. हुन्छ। फलको बाहिरी भाग हल्का झुस भएको भित्र मसिनो बीउ हुन्छ। फल अलिकति गुलियो टर्रो स्वादको हुन्छ।

    औषधीय प्रयोग लाभहरू:

    बर्रोको फल विभिन्न स्वास्थ्य समस्याहरूको उपचारका लागि व्यापक रूपमा प्रयोग गरिन्छ। यो पाचन तंत्रलाई सुधार्न, दाँत बलियो बनाउन, गिजाबाट रगत बग्न रोक्न प्रयोग गरिन्छ। ज्वरोको उपचारमा यसको फल उपयोगी हुन्छ भने बीउ ब्रोन्काइटिसको औषधिका रूपमा प्रयोग हुन्छ। बर्रोको फल पानीमा भिजाएर बनाएको घोलले आँखा धोएमा संक्रमणको उपचारमा फाइदा हुन्छ।

    अन्य प्रयोगहरू:

    बर्रोको बोक्रा सुकाएर तातोपानीसँग मिलाएर सेवन गर्दा खोकी, दम, कब्जियतमा राहत दिन्छ। पखाला, जुलाफ, टाउको दुखाइमा पनि यसको प्रयोग हुन्छ। यसका साथै, बर्रोले आँखा, छाला, अन्य शारीरिक समस्याहरूमा पनि फाइदा पुर्याउँछ।

    संरक्षण स्थिति:

    बर्रोको जडीबुटीहरूको व्यापारमा ठूलो माग , जसका कारण यसको व्यावसायिक महत्त्व पनि दिनदिनै बढिरहेको छ। यसको अनियन्त्रित दोहनले गर्दा यसको संरक्षणको आवश्यकता महसुस भएको छ।

    Introduction:

    Barro, also called Belleric Myrobolan, is a big deciduous tree that grows up to 30 to 40 meters in height. The bark is dark and coarse, while the wood is somewhat yellowish. Leaves are long, broad, and mostly occur in clusters at the end of branches. It is elliptical to ovate with leathery texture and unequal base. This tree bears small yellowish flowers in the months of October to November and yields fruits from November to February.

     

    Availability:

    It grows mainly in the Eastern, Central, and Western parts of Nepal, especially in forests dominated by Shorea robusta. The elevation range for the species is from 300-1100 meters above sea level. The species is very common in thick forests and an important source in local economies because of the medicinal and commercial value it provides.

     

    Time of collection and traded part:

    Fruits of Barro are collected from December to March. The fruit and seed of the tree are traded. The fruit is globose, 1.3 to 2 cm in diameter, brown, and slightly hairy. Inside, tiny seeds are enclosed. The taste is slightly sweet and bitter, and the surface is coarse as compared to the other species, Terminalia chebula (Harro).

     

    Medicinal Uses and Benefits:

    Fruit is regarded as very valuable in Unani medicine due to its digestive properties. Fruit strengthens the teeth and cures bleeding of the gums. The fruit is used in fever treatments, while its seeds are said to be useful in cases of bronchitis. Soaked overnight in water, it can be an efficient remedy for eye infections.

     

    This is the powdered form of dried Barro fruit mixed with hot water used for treating cough, asthma, and constipation, among other conditions. It also helps in diarrhea, respiratory issues, and headaches. It will be of immense use as one regularly uses the remedies made from Barro to improve one's health, especially chronic respiratory and digestive problems.

     

    How to Use:

    For Digestive Issues: The dried fruit powder, mixed with water, heals indigestion and constipation.

    For Cough and Cold: Boiling the dried fruit dust in water and drinking it cures cough, asthma, and congestion in the chest.

    For Eye Infections: Soaking the fruit in water overnight and washing the eyes with the solution the next morning heals the infection or irritation in the eyes.

    Dentist Problems: Fruit is used to massage the gums as it firms them up, reducing bleeding.

    Conservation and Commercial Importance:

    Due to its wide range of medicinal applications, Barro has acquired significant commercial value in the herbal trade, especially in Nepal. However, its ever-increasing demand has conversely raised concerns about over-harvesting this plant in the wild, thereby threatening its existence. Its conservation is thus being called for since it will ensure that the sustainability of the natural population is conserved and that future generations continue to enjoy its benefits.

     

    Conclusion:

    Barro has been proved to be one of the resourceful and valuable herbs in Nepal, as it has various medicinal usages. It helps to maintain one's digestion, strengthens the immunity system, and is used for respiratory problems. Its broad usage in traditional medicine makes it an important part of Nepal's rich herbal treasure. While promoting sustainable harvesting, Barro can continue to benefit people both medically and economically for generations.
