Introduction:
Bhutkesh, known as Ragwort or Milk Parsley in English, is a
perennial herb originating in the high-altitude areas of Nepal. It usually
grows to a height of 1.5 meters and falls under the Apiaceae family. This plant
has hollow stems and leaves that are finely divided, somewhat like coriander
leaves. Small white flowers bloom in a dense cluster at the top of the stems.
Bhutkesh has medicinal value and is thus considered an important part of
traditional medicine in Nepal.
Availability and Natural Distribution:
Bhutkesh thrives in the mountainous regions of Nepal,
ranging between altitudes of 2500 and 4500 meters. It thrives on open, rocky
ground and is more common in Annapurna, Langtang National Park, and Sagarmatha
National Park environs. Its habit of growing on infertile and rocky ground has
made this plant resilient and widespread in Nepal's higher altitudes.
Harvesting Time and Parts Used:
The commercial value of Bhutkesh is mainly extracted from
its roots. The collection of its roots may be best done during October-November
at the time when the crop attains full maturity. During this time, the
medicines would be more contained within the roots, which are highly valuable
in the local and international markets. After the collection, the roots are
processed and sold for their medicinal values.
Description of the Roots:
The fresh Bhutkesh root is light yellow color with fine
hair-like covering. These roots are wiry, thin, tender, and hair-like. It turns
brown when dried and the hair-like structure becomes somewhat less prominent,
though the interior remains its light yellow-white color. The smell of the root
itself is like black cumin and further enhances its appeal for medicinal uses.
Medicinal Uses and Benefits:
The roots of Bhutkes find their application in traditional
medicine, essentially for the treatment of stomach-related diseases. It is
highly effective and efficient in cases of stomach ache, gastric problems, and
fever. Its medicinal action soothes the digestive system; thus, it finds wide
application in rural as well as urban areas.
1. Relieving Stomach Pain:
Relief from stomach ache is one of the most common uses of
Bhutkesh. The natural ingredient in it works as an antispasmodic, which helps
loosen the muscles of the tummy and intestines, hence relieving pain. It is,
therefore, very effective for patients who have indigestion, bloating, or
cramps.
2. Gastric Problems:
Acidity and indigestion are some of the major issues in
large parts of Nepal where food intake is highly starched and spicy. Commonly,
Bhutkesh is used by the people to counteract these issues due to its
anti-inflammatory properties and its ability to promote better digestion. It
helps neutralize excess stomach acid, which makes it very relieving in cases of
heartburn and discomfort in the gastric region.
3. Reduction of Fever:
In folk medicine, Bhutkesh is also considered as a
febrifuge, whereby it reduces fever. Preparation: The roots of the plant are
boiled in water to prepare a decoction that is consumed to reduce body
temperature during episodes of fever; this is particularly practiced by people
in rural areas where modern medical assistance may not always be sought or
easily accessible.
Commercial Importance:
Not only is Bhutkesh valued for its medicinal properties,
but it also has commercial importance in both local and international markets.
Export of the dried roots is done to various countries that use them in the
preparation of herbal remedies and supplements. In addition to the foregoing
uses, the resemblance in odor to black cumin adds to its marketability as a
very important commodity in the herbal medicine trade.
Conservation Status and Sustainable Harvesting:
The craze of Bhutkesh because of its medicinal benefits has
resulted in increased commercial extraction. Increased demand has given way to
calls against over-exploiting this plant especially from the wild. The adoption
of sustainable practices in this case would ensure continued survival of
Bhutkesh in the wild. This is the most valuable herb, which needs conservation
in order not to get depleted.
The need to pursue its harvesting in a sustainable manner
has been increasing in the recent past, with the local communities and
conservation organizations consolidating responsible collection behavior. Such
efforts will go a long way in ensuring Bhutkesh is preserved for future
generations by controlling the season of its harvesting and limiting the
quantities collected.
Conclusion:
Bhutkesh or Ragwort is a vital medicinal herb that grows in
the high-altitude areas of Nepal. Its roots are cherished for treating stomach
ailments, gastric issues, and fever; thus, it is regarded as an essential plant
in traditional medicine. Keeping in mind the rise in demand for herbal
medicine, Bhutkesh has huge potential commercially, not only domestically but
also internationally. However, such commercial exploitation must not exceed the
threshold of sustainability to ensure that the species is preserved for many
years to come.
