    Introduction:

Nagbeli, also known as Club Moss, is an evergreen plant with the appearance of a trailing vine. It has plenty of branches, small, scale-like leaves that grow compactly, hence giving a full appearance. The spores, which are the reproductive structures of the plant, are contained in greenish-yellow, elongated pods covered with fine hair. The spores are a major ingredient in this plant's traditional medicinal uses and trade.

It spreads by creeping along the ground or over other plants for support. Due to its fine texture and denseness, Nagbeli encompasses a distinguished part of Nepal's natural flora.

    Availability and Distribution:

It is found in Nepal within the range of 1,200 to 3,500 meters. The tree thrives well in damp, shady areas, usually on sloping land or less fertile or abandoned ones. Owing to its growth in such uncongenial conditions, it becomes a vital part of the ecosystem, particularly in hilly and mountainous regions.

    Harvesting Time and Trade:

The spores of the Nagbeli plant are collected from the pods between the month of October and November, when they have matured. These spores are very fine and slippery; they are butter-like in consistency. The spores were originally found to be in great demand and were exported from Nepal. Since adulteration practices were found to be on a high scale, it is exported very rarely now.

    Parts Used in Trade:

It is the spores that form the most commercially valuable part of Nagbeli. Very fine and light in texture, the spores are used medicinally to cosmetic products like facial powders to creams. Though much in use, the export of Nagbeli spores from Nepal has reduced due to problems relating to quality control.

    Medicinal Uses and Benefits:

In fact, the whole plant Nagbeli is medicinally very important. It is mainly utilized because of its diuretic properties that are very effective in the treatment of urinary problems. Traditionally, the whole plant is utilized in the treatment of asthma.

The plant uses its twig tips and roots for medicinal purposes in various diseases, including gout, lung infections, and kidney problems; this has made Nagbeli a very useful resource in traditional healing practices across Nepal.

    Cosmetic and Ornamental Uses:

Besides its medicinal purposes, Nagbeli is also of ornamental value: it has very long, trailing vines used as decoration. Its spores are popularly used in the manufacturing of facial creams and body powders in various industries, for their soothing and softening effect on the skin.

    Conservation and Current Trade:

While Nagbeli had always been one of the major exports from Nepal, the adulteration factor reduced the trade significantly in recent years. A strategic conservation approach is needed because of the plant's medicinal and ecological value. Since the plant grows wild, there should be certain methods of collection to avoid over-exploitation.

    Conclusion

Nagbeli or Club Moss is an important plant in traditional Nepalese medicine and trade. Nagbeli, growing at high altitude, can thrive under harsh conditions with a host of benefits. Due to its medicinal value, the resource is considered highly useful in the treatment of asthma, urinary problems, and many other related disorders. Furthermore, the spores of these plants are used in cosmetics to add even more value to this multi-tasking flora. However, the decline in exports due to issues with quality brings into focus the need for more value addition with better conservation and trade practices. Sustainable management ensures the continuity of Nagbeli as an important part of Nepal's herbal wealth.
