Introduction:
Dhayero, commonly referred to as Fire-flame Bush, is one of
the most important medicinal shrubs of Nepal. It is a perennial woody plant
that grows around 3 meters tall, sometimes reaching 7 meters high. The bark is
rough and reddish, while the leaves of this plant are lance-shaped and smooth
with a dark green upper surface, having a velvety lower part. This plant bears
bright red or crimson flowers that are usually in clusters.
Availability:
Naturally, the distribution of Dhayero falls within all
parts of Nepal, which lies between 200 to 1800 meters altitude. Quite
frequently, it is found in dry and open areas of the country. Within the
context of Nepal, this plant is widely used and valued; not only for its
aesthetic appeal but also commercially and medicinally.
Harvesting Time:
Flowers of the Dhayero plant are normally collected during
the months of April to May. The flowers are dried up after collection for
trading and medicinal purposes.
Part Used in Trade:
The part of the Dhayero plant used in the trade is its dried
flower. These flowers are crimson or red colored, small, tubular, and fragrant.
Sometimes leaves and pieces of petiole are added along with the flowers.
Uses and Benefits:
The flowers have a natural red-colored dye useful for
ordinary dyeing of fabrics, among other materials. In addition to the flower
acting as a dye, the flower has remarkable medicinal abilities. Some of the
ordinary uses include:
Dysentery and Diarrhea: Boil the flower and drink as
medicine to treat diseases like diarrhea and dysentery.
Menstrual Disorders: It will help women who suffer from
heavy menstruation by taking decoction of Dhayero flowers.
Bleeding Disorders: The flower is used to control bleeding
from the nose and mouth.
Indigestion: The boiled flower in water helps in relieving
indigestion.
The flower's medicinal properties also are said to treat
minor cuts and skin irritations when applied topically.
Conservation and Environmental Impact:
Apart from health benefits, dhayero plays an important role
in the environment. The plant, in old practices, sometimes undergoes burning
and produces smoke to help repel harmful insects away from crops and plants.
This has, therefore, raised its value for organic farming and natural pest
control.
Conclusion:
Dhayero is one of the value herbs in Nepal, which is used
for many purposes-starting from producing a natural dye to treating various
health problems. Its presence in different regions of Nepal and its medicinal
values make it very high in demand both locally and internationally. The use of
this herb is deeply rooted in traditional medicine of Nepal whereby the people
since time immemorial have used it against a variety of ailments.
