    Introduction:

Gamdol is a terrestrial orchid that reaches a height of approximately 20 centimeters. The leaves of this plant measure from 2 up to 5 centimeters in length and 0.8 to 1.8 centimeters in width. The petiole is absent because the leaves directly attach to the stem. The leaves are lance-like, having a distinct mid-rib with a slightly rough green color. Small flowers, soft blue-pink-colored, commonly reaching 1 centimeter in diameter, flowering from August to October.

    Availability:

It grows between 1000 to 2000 meters above sea level, with a preference for mixed forests dominated by Sal trees and broad-leaved species. Under these conditions, the right environment is created for the ideal growth and development of Gamdol.

    Part Used in Trade:

The main part traded is its "rhizome," or underground stem.

    Time of Collection:

The harvesting season of Gamdol usually falls between September and November, after the plant has fully matured and the rhizomes are ready for collection.

    Description of Traded Part:

Each plant of Gamdol bears two rhizomes which measure between 0.8 to 1.4 cm. They are hard as stone and swollen at the middle while tapering off on both ends. Slightly brownish in colour, they are rather distinctive from similar flora.

    Uses:

The rhizome of Gamdol is put to many medicinal uses. It is mainly known as an expectorant-meaning that it serves to clear the airways of mucus. The plant will, therefore, be of particular help to those who suffer from cough or respiratory problems. Secondarily, Gamdol is also used as an astringent, which will tend to tighten tissues and reduce bleeding. The rhizome is used as a tonic that assists in energizing the body by building up stamina and vitality. Traditional healers prescribe Gamdol to people who need to regain strength and energy after being sick or exhausted.

According to the Ayurvedic practices, the health benefits associated with Gamdol have been well mentioned. It is often used together with other herbs in order to produce its effect. In this regard, mixing it with honey gives it a soothing remedy for coughs and mixing it with other general tonic herbs helps in improving one's health.

    Conservation Status:

Being an orchid, Gamdol is under most conservation scrutiny. All the orchids have been listed under the CITES Appendix II, which includes species that are not necessarily threatened but may become so unless their management improves. This states the significance of sustainable harvesting practices so that Gamdol can be continued for generations to come. The conservation effort is very essential in preserving its natural habitat and hence allowing this valuable herb to continuously be included in the rich biodiversity of Nepal.

    Conclusion:

Gamdol is a remarkable herb representative of the unique flora found in Nepal. This plant, due to its therapeutic value, as well as traditional medicine, is very important both for the local people and for the herbal market. If adequately conserved and the collection proceeded in such a way that it did not harm the environment, then Gamdol will be able to thrive in its natural habitat for hundreds of years and continue offering its health benefits to those who seek curing properties from it. Emphasis on "herbs in Nepal" expresses the importance of such flora in Nepalese culture and healthcare, reflecting the deep bond between nature and traditional healing.
