पदमचाल, अमलवेद (Himalayan Rhubarb)

परिचय:

नेपालमा Rheum (पदमचाल) का ७ प्रजातिहरू पाइन्छन्, तर व्यापारमा चुरूका रूपमा मात्र Rheum australe को प्रयोग हुन्छ। यसको प्रकन्दलाई पदमचाल र पातको डाँठलाई अमलवेद भनिन्छ। साधारणतया यो झारको रूपमा १ मीटर उचाइसम्म हुन्छ, तर कहिलेकाहीं २.५ मीटरसम्म पनि पुग्न सक्छ। यसका फूल र पातको डाँठ रातो रंगको हुन्छ। वर्षात्को शुरुमा यसको पुनरुत्पादन हुन्छ।

उपलब्धता:

पदमचाल हिमाल र उच्च पहाडी भागको ३२०० देखि ४२०० मीटरसम्मको उचाईमा चट्टान र घासको मैदानमा पाइन्छ।

व्यापारमा आउने भाग:

पदमचालको प्रकन्द, पातको डाँठ र पात व्यापारमा आउँछन्।

सङ्कलन समय:

पदमचालको प्रकन्द निकाल्न कात्तिकदेखि वैशाख महिनासम्म, फूल फुल्नुभन्दा ठीक अगाडि सबैभन्दा उपयुक्त हुन्छ।

व्यापारमा आउने भागबारे सामान्य जानकारी:

पदामचालको प्रकन्द खैरो रंगको, काठजस्तो र गठिलो हुन्छ। यसका बाहिर चाउरी जस्तो रिङहरू देखिन्छन् र मध्यभागमा वार्षिक रिङहरू हुन्छन्। अमलवेद हल्का पहेंलो रंगको हुन्छ र यसको स्वाद अमिलो हुन्छ।

प्रयोग:

पदमचालको प्रकन्द र काण्डमा विभिन्न किसिमका Anthra quinine समूहका यौगिक र Emodin भनी जाने वनस्पतिक रसायन पाइन्छ। यसको प्रकन्द, पातको डाँठ, पात र जरा सबै प्रयोग गर्न सकिन्छ। प्रकन्द र पातको डाँठ पखाला, वाथ रोग र छारे रोगको औषधिको रूपमा प्रयोग हुन्छ। पात र डाँठलाई काँचै र उमालेर अचारको रूपमा खाने गरिन्छ। यसका जराको पाउडर दाँत सफा गर्नको लागि पनि प्रयोग गरिन्छ।

संरक्षणको अवस्था:

नेपाल सरकारले यसलाई खेती र संरक्षणको लागि प्राथमिकता दिएको छ।

Introduction:

There are 7 species of Rheum found in Nepal out of which only Rheum australe is commonly traded. Root of Rheum australe is known as Padamchal and stem is called Amalved. Leaf and leaf petioles are known as Karaj Chulthi or Chulthi Amilo. Generally, it is a perennial herb growing up to 1 meter high but sometimes reaches up to 3.5 meters. Flowers and leaves are attached to a red-colored stalk and petiole, respectively. It regrows from the root during the monsoon.

Availability:

Padamchal is distributed in mountain and high hills of Nepal ranging from 3,200 to 4,200 m altitude, generally in rocky and grassy areas.

Parts used in trade:

Rhizome, leaf petiole, and leafy part are the main traded parts.

Time of Harvesting:

Timing of collection: The rhizome of Padamchal is to be collected from November onwards up to the month of May before the floral stage.

Description of Traded Parts:

The rhizome is compact and solid, brown, and with thick bark. The outer structure of the root exhibits wrinkled rings, whereas the middle part of it exhibits yearly rounded rings. The leaf petioles are mild yellow in color with an acidic taste.

Uses:

The rhizome and stem have anthraquinone compounds and a phytochemical compound named Emodin. Almost all vegetative parts are usable, including the rhizome, leaf petioles, leaves, and roots. The rhizome and petioles are employed medicinally for diarrhea, gout, and epilepsy. Leaves and stems are edible, consumed raw or boiled, and are most commonly prepared as pickles. The powdered root is also used as a cleaning agent for teeth.
