Juniperus indica, which is popularly known as Black Juniper, is included in the category of family Cupressaceae. There are four different species of Juniper found in Nepal, and those include Juniperus indica, Juniperus recurva, Juniperus squamata, and Juniperus communis. However, Juniperus indica has been recorded as the most common for commercial purposes. It usually grows as a shrub or a small tree with a height of approximately 0.5 to 2 meters high, having mostly horizontal branches. The leaves are dark grey-green; there are two types: the adults have scale-like leaves, while the younger ones have needle-like leaves.

    Availability and Natural Distribution:

Black Juniper occurs in the Himalayas of Nepal, within an altitude range between 3000-4600 meters. The plant is found as a shrub above 4000 meters, while it exists as tall trees below this altitude. Generally, the plant grows well on open, rocky, and dry alpine slopes, thus well adapted to mountainous regions of Nepal.

Harvesting Time and Parts Used in Trade:

Leaves of Black Juniper can be collected at any time of the year, but fruits are available in the months of July and August. In trade, leaves, fruits, and upper parts of the petiole are used. Dry leaves are greenish-brown in color. When rubbed between the hands, the leaves emit a sweet, fragrant smell, which acts as one of the essential identifying features of this plant in its commercial types.

    Uses, Properties and Benefits:

Juniper is highly valued in traditional and modern medicine. Locals often dry leaves and give them as gifts to relatives in Kathmandu or abroad. Its leaves make appetite, relieve stomachaches, kill stomach worms, dysentery, piles, and bronchitis. While the fruit is a natural sex stimulant, it treats asthma, chronic bronchitis, liver diseases, and issues affecting the bone marrow.

Juniper essential oil forms the base of most commercial products. It is employed in the perfuming of alcoholic beverages. It also forms part of various very highly-priced cosmetic items such as soaps and perfumes. Juniper oil is also used in the manufacture of disinfectants and other hygiene products.

    Application Methods:

For loss of appetite and digestive problems :

Boil Juniper leaves in water and drink the tea after meals.

Respiratory issues: Smoke generated through the combustion of Juniper leaves is inhaled to cure bronchitis and asthma.

Skin issues and cosmetics:Juniper oil is used in soaps and lotions for skin ailment or to have more fragrant aroma.

As a tonic: It can be taken as Juniper fruit itself or may be infused in alcohol for increased vigor.

Conservation Status: Though highly used, the exact conservation status of Black Juniper in Nepal is not known. Due to its high commercial importance and increased demand, its harvesting should be done in such a way that this valuable plant species is conserved. More focused research and government regulation are necessary for its long-time preservation.
