It is widely distributed in the high altitudes of Nepal, but more abundant on the open pasturelands of Eastern and Central Nepal from 2700 to 4200 meters above sea level. Its leaves are palmately incised into five lobes, and the flowers are blue or violet with a small, awlshaped spur. This root is of high value due to its medicinal properties and hence is in great demand in traditional herbal medicine.

Nirmasi is quite widely spread over the high altitude open areas of Nepal, particularly in Eastern and Central Nepal. This is the best habitat for this plant as it competes hardly for survival in open fields with plenty of sunlight.

Harvesting Time and Parts Used in Trade

The roots of Nirmasi are collected during October-November. These roots form the principal ones traded due to their pharmacological action. The roots are coarse in texture, yellowish-brown colored, and reported to be bitter in taste with an acrid overtone.

    Commercial Importance and Conservation Status

This has created great commercial value for Nirmasi in the country, since it is in growing demand both in the herbal market of the country and elsewhere in the world. Its root raw material is used by various herbal companies to prepare medicine. Due to over-exploitation, there exists a threat that in the near future, the plant may get scarce. Harvesting practices need to be sensitive so that this useful herb is preserved for the future, besides conservation efforts. Conclusion

Its root contains a multitude of medicinal uses and is important in traditional medicine.
