Nirmasi, also known as Larkspur, is a perennial herb that
grows 70 cm high. It is widely distributed in the high altitudes of Nepal, but
more abundant on the open pasturelands of Eastern and Central Nepal from 2700
to 4200 meters above sea level. Its leaves are palmately incised into five
lobes, and the flowers are blue or violet with a small, awlshaped spur. This
root is of high value due to its medicinal properties and hence is in great
demand in traditional herbal medicine.
Availability and Natural Distribution
Nirmasi is quite widely spread over the high altitude open
areas of Nepal, particularly in Eastern and Central Nepal. This is the best
habitat for this plant as it competes hardly for survival in open fields with
plenty of sunlight.
Harvesting Time and Parts Used in Trade
The roots of Nirmasi are collected during October-November.
These roots form the principal ones traded due to their pharmacological action.
The roots are coarse in texture, yellowish-brown colored, and reported to be
bitter in taste with an acrid overtone.
Medicinal Uses, Properties, and Benefits
Nirmasi root is one of the most valued roots in Ayurveda due
to the numerous health benefits it provides. Some of the major uses are
discussed below:
Production of Internal Heat and Digestion:
The root of Nirmasi is used in producing internal heat as
well as digesting food materials. Hence, this plant has been used in the
treatment of disorders related to the digestive system.
Treatment of Acidity:
This root is really effective in reducing the amount of
acidity, thereby reducing gastric problems, discomfort created by the excess
production of stomach acid.
Fever: Nirmasi is the common treatment for fever. Ulcers:
Its roots are also used in ulcers due to their potential to soothe the inner
lining of the stomach. To treat cough: Nirmasi provides a natural solution to
people who suffer from chronic coughs. Anti-poisoning: When anybody gets
poisoned, the root of Nirmasi is taken as a budding agent to counteract the
toxin in his body, which further makes it an essential tool in the traditional
anti-poisonous treatment. Preparations
Nirmasi is mainly administered after drying and powdering
into a fine powder. It can be taken by mouth in the form of a watery paste in a
dose of 1-2 grams. However, consultation with a qualified herbal practitioner
is necessary before consumption.
Commercial Importance and Conservation Status
This has created great commercial value for Nirmasi in the
country, since it is in growing demand both in the herbal market of the country
and elsewhere in the world. Its root raw material is used by various herbal
companies to prepare medicine. Due to over-exploitation, there exists a threat
that in the near future, the plant may get scarce. Harvesting practices need to
be sensitive so that this useful herb is preserved for the future, besides
conservation efforts. Conclusion
Nirmasi, in common parlance, is called Larkspur. Found in
almost all regions of Nepal, especially in higher altitudes, it is a versatile
and potent herb. Its root contains a multitude of medicinal uses and is
important in traditional medicine. Be it for the treatment of fever, ulcers,
acidity, or even an antidote for poisoning, Nirmasi bears significance in
herbal healing. However, the use of this herb will be available even to future
generations if it undergoes sustainable harvesting and conservation.
