    Introduction

Majitho, also known as Madder, is a perennial herb found across the mountainous regions of Nepal. With its rough stems that climb over nearby shrubs, this herb has been revered in traditional medicine for centuries. The plant features rough, four-sided stems, leaves that grow in clusters, and flowers that bloom between June and November. These are small flowers, dark red in color, and grow in clusters that ultimately turn into round, blackish fruits, which secrete red juice when pressed.

Majitho grows abundantly within the altitudinal range from 1200 to 2700 meters above sea level, and thus, its availability is easy throughout the hilly regions of Nepal. Both its roots and stems are in trade and are medicinally important, and the collection time for this plant falls during October and November.

It contains active chemicals such as alizarin and purpurin in its roots and stems, hence the medicinal and practical uses. Here it goes in detail about its uses and advantages.

    1. Skin Diseases Treatment (चर्म रोगको उपचार)

For many years, Majitho has been used in the treatment of different skin diseases. The anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial action heals rashes and infections; even chronic skin diseases like eczema and psoriasis are treated with it. By improving blood circulation and the purification process of the blood, Majitho keeps the skin texture healthy.

    2. Heart Health (हृदय रोगको उपचार)

Majitho's root is said to have some benefits concerning cardiovascular health. The properties present in this plant improve blood circulation, hence making the heart muscles stronger. It finds its traditional application in ayurvedic medicine for preventing heart attacks, maintaining blood pressure, and generally maintaining good heart health.

    3. Healing Ulcers (अल्सरको उपचार)

The herb is very effective in ulcer treatment, either internal or external. With its soothing and astringent properties, this herb may be of immense service for calming the digestive system and healing stomach ulcers. It also works as a digestive tonic promoting healthy digestion and reduces problems like indigestion and acid reflux.

    4. Antidote for Snake and Scorpion Bites (सर्प बिच्छीको विष हटाउन)

Majitho is also famous for its effectiveness in the treatment of poisonous bites. The stem and petiole of the plant are antidotes to snake bites (like that of cobras) and scorpion stings. Traditionally, extracts from the plant are applied directly on the bite area to nullify the effect of the poison.

    5. Coloring Agent (रंगाउन प्रयोग)

The roots of Majitho have been employed for a long time in preparing natural dyes. Particularly, it imparts a red color to woolen threads, which are used in traditional carpet manufacturing. The application of Majitho in the textile industry makes it commercially important.

    Properties of Majitho (मजिठोका गुणहरू)

Majitho contains a number of major medicinal and chemical properties, which make it useful:

Alizarin and Purpurin are considered the two major active chemical constituents of Majitho. Alizarin is responsible for the red dye in the compound. It provides purpurin, which carries out its antioxidant action.

Anti-inflammatory: Reduces inflammation, thus it is very useful for reducing skin diseases, ulcers, and even joint pains.

Antimicrobial: This herb is useful against noxious bacteria and fungi; hence, it supports treatment against infection.

Astringent: Being an astringent, it treats ulcers and advances the process of wound healing.

    Parts Utilised of Majitho (मजिठोको प्रयोग हुने भाग)

The most important parts of the plant, both from a pharmacological and commercial point of view, are the root and the stem of Majitho.

    1. Root (जरा)

Roots of Majitho are sweet, slightly sour, and bitter. The roots contain alizarin that imparts the plant its typical red color. The roots are generally collected during October and November when it attains its maximum potency.

Use: The root is usually dried and powdered and then used in herbal preparation for internal administration. They can also be boiled to make a medicinal tea or in the form of their extract mixed with oils for topical application to skin wounds and ulcers.

    2. Stem (काण्ड)

The stem of the Majitho plant is four-sided and rough, with a woody texture. The reddish coloration is found in the inner part of the stem.

Usage Method: The stem is dried and used in various remedies. For venomous bites, the extract from the stem is applied directly to the affected area. For heart health and skin treatments, the dried stem can be made into a powder and consumed with water or mixed into pastes for topical application.

    Treatment of Diseases

Majitho has been traditionally used to treat the following ailments:

    1. Paralysis (पक्षघात)

The herb Majitho would help in the performance of nerves and allow proper blood flow, which would be very useful in treating paralysis. Herbalists use this root extract for stimulating nerves and muscle recovery of the paralyzed limb.

    2. Skin Diseases (चर्म रोग)

These properties of the plant are highly useful in the treatment of skin infections, eczema, and rashes. Application of oils or pastes prepared by infusing Majitho on the skin would reduce irritation and speed up the process of recovery.

    3. Ulcers

Majitho root extract heals internal ulcers, especially Pyorrhea of the stomach. The astringent nature of this herb soothes the digestive tract and prevents further formation of ulcers.

    4. Venomous Bites

These parts of the plant are therefore used in the treatment of snake and scorpion stings. Traditionally, the juice or extract from the stem is applied directly on the site of the bite to neutralize the venom by arresting its spread.

    Conservation and Commercial Importance (संरक्षण व्यापारिक महत्त्व)

Majitho has immense value, particularly in traditional medicine and commercial use. This herb was a source of a red-colored dye for many centuries, mainly in the textile industry that deals with dyeing wool for carpets. Its medicinal properties help it be an inseparable part of herbal treatments against skin conditions, cardiovascular health, and digestive issues.

Recognizing its importance, the Government of Nepal has framed priorities for its cultivation and conservation. Since it is in great demand both in the local and international markets, its value as a commodity has evoked interest in sustainable farming of the crop.

    Conclusion

Majitho, or Madder, has been a versatile herbal plant that has been in use for a long period of time in many medicinal and commercial purposes, such as treating heart conditions and skin diseases, being an antidote for venomous bites, among others. This herb proves its worth after many centuries of traditional use. With the rise in conservation concerns, Majitho remains a common herb in natural medicine and the dye industry, representing iconically rich herbal heritage in Nepal.
