It is also known as Pakhanved or Pasanved and is considered
one among the high-altitude perennial herbs of the Nepalese region.
Scientifically, it is known in the name of Bergenia ciliata, which belongs to
the family Saxifragaceae. The plant reaches a height of 30 cm and spreads
parallel to the ground. Leaves are 15-30 cm long and 5-10 cm wide, containing
small hairs along the edges. Flowers are rose or white-colored and grow in
clusters, flowering from April to June. The fruits appear from July to August.
Availability and Natural Distribution:
Rockfoil is mainly distributed from 1600 to 3200 meters
elevation in the hills of Nepal. It grows in moist, shady places and is more
commonly seen growing over stones or at the roots of mountains.
Harvesting Time and Part Used in Trade:
The underground stem (rhizome) of Rockfoil has the highest
commercial value. This herb is best collected from October to November of the
year. The rhizome of this plant is brown in color, fragrant, and has small
roots; the diameter is approximately 1 cm. It is hard in appearance but woody,
soft when chewed, somewhat bitter in taste. The outer layer of the dried stem
is wrinkled.
Uses, Properties and Benefits:
The rootstock of Rockfoil contains a chemical
Bergenia-c-glycoside, which is used in medicine for treating cancer. According
to Ayurveda, the rhizome is utilized to cure diseases such as dysentery, fever,
kidney diseases, etc. It is energizing in nature and hence treats cough,
stomach aches, and heart ailments.
Here's how Rockfoil can be used:
For Fever and Dysentery: Rockfoil rhizome can be powdered
and taken with water to reduce fever or dysentery.
For Kidney Health: This herb is commonly taken as a general
tonic that facilitates the passing of kidney stones.
As an Energy Booster: In Ayurveda, it is claimed that
Rockfoil provides added energy, particularly for the ailing or convalescent.
Conservation Status:
Because of its medicinal value, the Government of Nepal has
prioritized Rockfoil as one of the prime plants for cultivation and
conservation. It is said that due to the ever-increasing demand in both the
local and international markets, already Rockfoil is at risk of overharvesting.
Efforts are being made for promoting its cultivation in controlled conditions
for conservation of the species.
Conclusion:
Pakhanved, better known as Rockfoil, is one of the most
important medicinal herbs in Nepal. It shields one from simple fever to renal
pathologies. Because of its specific chemical composition and the long
tradition of usage in Ayurveda practices, this herb has great commercial and
medicinal value. However, due to over-harvesting, this species has been
threatened and the habitats are being destroyed; therefore, conservation has
become quite vital. In fact, Nepal is working on preserving this valuable herb
for future generations through the promotion of sustainable harvesting
practices and encouraging cultivation.
Key Takeaways:
Pakhanved grows at high altitude, wet areas mainly in the
hills of Nepal.
The underground stem of this herb is used as medicine that
contains the medicinal property and is used to treat critical health diseases
like cancer, kidney-related problems, among others.
Conservation and cultivation of Pakhanved should be done in
order to ensure its availability in future times.
Being in a position to understand and realize its great
potential as a herb, and being prudent enough to use the herb judiciously so as
to ensure that we keep on being healed by this herb without harming the natural
environment in which it grows.
