पाखनवेद, जसलाई पाषाणभेद पनि भनिन्छ, नेपालका उच्च पहाडी क्षेत्रहरूमा पाइने एक विशेष औषधीय वनस्पति हो। यसको वैज्ञानिक

    नाम Bergenia ciliata हो यो Saxifragaceae परिवारमा पर्छ। यो करिब ३० से.मी. अग्लो हुने, जमिनसँग समानान्तर रूपमा फैलने झार वर्गको बहुवर्षीय वनस्पति हो। यसको पातहरू १५ देखि ३० से.मी. लामो देखि १० से.मी. चौडा हुन्छन्, किनारामा मसिना रौँहरूले घेरेको हुन्छ। फूलहरू गुलाबी वा सेतो रंगका हुन्छन्, जुन मुख्यतया चैतदेखि जेठसम्म फुल्छ। यसले असार साउन महिनामा फल लगाउँछ।

    उपलब्धता वितरण:

    पाखनवेद नेपालका ९०० देखि ३२०० मिटर उचाइसम्मका पहाडी क्षेत्रमा पाइन्छ। यो प्रायः ओसिलो घाम नपर्ने ढुंगे भागहरूमा राम्ररी उम्रन्छ। विशेष गरी पहाडका ढुंगामा यो वनस्पति सहज रूपमा पाइन्छ, जसकारण यसको नाम पाषाणभेद (ढुंगा तोड्न सक्ने) राखिएको हो।

    सङ्कलन समय व्यापारमा आउने भाग:

    पाखनवेदको काण्ड, विशेष गरी जमिनमुनि हुने भाग, व्यापारका लागि महत्त्वपूर्ण मानिन्छ। यसको सङ्कलन समय आश्विनदेखि कार्तिकसम्म हो। व्यापारमा आउने भाग खैरो रंगको काण्ड हुन्छ, जसमा मसिना जरा पाइन्छन्। यसलाई चपाउँदा नरम काठ जस्तो हुन्छ स्वादमा अलिकति टर्रो हुन्छ।

    प्रयोग औषधीय गुणहरू:

    पाखनवेदको काण्डमा Bergenia-c-glycoside भन्ने रसायन पाइन्छ, जसलाई अर्बुदरोग (क्यान्सर) निरोधक औषधि बनाउन प्रयोग गरिन्छ। यसबाहेक, पाखनवेदको गानो (राइजोम) झाडापखाला, ज्वरो, मिर्गौला सम्बन्धी समस्याहरूको उपचारमा प्रयोग गरिन्छ। आयुर्वेदमा यसको प्रयोग तागत दिने, कफ कम गर्ने, हृदय रोगको उपचार गर्ने, पेट दुखेको बेलामा पनि गरिन्छ।

    संरक्षण अवस्था:

    नेपाल सरकारले पाखनवेदको खेती संरक्षणलाई प्राथमिकतामा राखेको छ। यसको औषधीय महत्त्वका कारण यसको खेतीलाई प्रोत्साहन दिइएको , यसलाई संकटापन्न वनस्पतिको रूपमा पनि लिइन्छ।

     

     

    It is also known as Pakhanved or Pasanved and is considered one among the high-altitude perennial herbs of the Nepalese region. Scientifically, it is known in the name of Bergenia ciliata, which belongs to the family Saxifragaceae. The plant reaches a height of 30 cm and spreads parallel to the ground. Leaves are 15-30 cm long and 5-10 cm wide, containing small hairs along the edges. Flowers are rose or white-colored and grow in clusters, flowering from April to June. The fruits appear from July to August.

     

    Availability and Natural Distribution:

    Rockfoil is mainly distributed from 1600 to 3200 meters elevation in the hills of Nepal. It grows in moist, shady places and is more commonly seen growing over stones or at the roots of mountains.

     

    Harvesting Time and Part Used in Trade:

    The underground stem (rhizome) of Rockfoil has the highest commercial value. This herb is best collected from October to November of the year. The rhizome of this plant is brown in color, fragrant, and has small roots; the diameter is approximately 1 cm. It is hard in appearance but woody, soft when chewed, somewhat bitter in taste. The outer layer of the dried stem is wrinkled.

     

    Uses, Properties and Benefits:

    The rootstock of Rockfoil contains a chemical Bergenia-c-glycoside, which is used in medicine for treating cancer. According to Ayurveda, the rhizome is utilized to cure diseases such as dysentery, fever, kidney diseases, etc. It is energizing in nature and hence treats cough, stomach aches, and heart ailments.

     

    Here's how Rockfoil can be used:

     

    For Fever and Dysentery: Rockfoil rhizome can be powdered and taken with water to reduce fever or dysentery.

    For Kidney Health: This herb is commonly taken as a general tonic that facilitates the passing of kidney stones.

    As an Energy Booster: In Ayurveda, it is claimed that Rockfoil provides added energy, particularly for the ailing or convalescent.

    Conservation Status:

    Because of its medicinal value, the Government of Nepal has prioritized Rockfoil as one of the prime plants for cultivation and conservation. It is said that due to the ever-increasing demand in both the local and international markets, already Rockfoil is at risk of overharvesting. Efforts are being made for promoting its cultivation in controlled conditions for conservation of the species.

    Pakhanved, better known as Rockfoil, is one of the most important medicinal herbs in Nepal. It shields one from simple fever to renal pathologies. Because of its specific chemical composition and the long tradition of usage in Ayurveda practices, this herb has great commercial and medicinal value. However, due to over-harvesting, this species has been threatened and the habitats are being destroyed; therefore, conservation has become quite vital. In fact, Nepal is working on preserving this valuable herb for future generations through the promotion of sustainable harvesting practices and encouraging cultivation.
