     Introduction:

Seabuckthorn is represented by two species in Nepal- Dalechuk. Dalechuk is a bushy plant, growing to 5 meters tall. Leaves are oval to lanceolate with silvery-green underside and covered with tiny hairs. Before the leaves are produced, the yellowish-brown male flowers appear. The small female flowers grow together with leaves. Bhuichuk is between 10 to 50 cm, again bushy and thorny.

    Availability:

It generally grows in the western and mid-western hilly regions of Nepal between an altitude of 2000 to 3700 meters. It grows on the banks of rivers, on the silt carried by rivers, and on the ground cleared by landslides. On the other hand, Bhuichuk belongs to higher altitudes, normally between 3300 to 4500 meters, particularly in rocky areas along with sandy riverbeds.

    Time of Harvesting:

Fruit is collected for both species between the months of September and November. The fruit is orange-red in color when mature and juicy.

    Parts Used in Trade:

Fruits from both species are employed commercially. When ripe they are juicy and brightly coloured, but extremely acid and hence somewhat unpalatable as raw fruit. They are nevertheless very rich in Vitamin C, one of the richest in concentration among fruits.

    Uses:

It is consumed to produce refreshing and nutritional drinks along with the fruits of Dalechuk and Bhuichuk. The juices are very much liked in the hilly and Himalayan tourist areas and are sold extensively to the tourists visiting there for refreshing drinks.

High quality essential oil has also been extracted from the seeds of these plants. This oil has a few medicinal properties, which include:

Skin Care: The oil might prevent skin wrinkling, which is one positive factor in skincare. This oil, if applied regularly, will keep the skin fresh and healthy.

Healing Properties: This essential oil has the properties of reducing swelling and working as an antibiotic. It relaxes and regenerates new tissues that are helpful for injury patients.

Cosmetic: Due to its skin-protecting property, this oil is used in cosmetics and even in sun creams. Thus, it acts as a protective barrier against the injurious rays of sunlight and helps skin stay healthy.

Nutritional Benefits: The high Vitamin C present in the fruit detoxifies the immune system and provides much-needed strength for fighting off infections. Hence, this fruit finds a great place in diets that are healthy.

Culinary Use: Other than juices, the sour fruits may also be used in jams, jellies, and sauces to give different cuisines a unique taste.

    Conclusion:

Dalechuk and Bhuichuk are imperative to the ecosystem of Nepal, as well as remarkably nutritious and healthy for human beings. Their nutritional content makes them vital in traditional medicine practices and food.
