बैज्ञानिक नाम: Aegle marmelos (Linn.) Corr.

परिवार: Rutaceae

परिचय:

बेल (बेल फलको रुख), नेपालमा जङ्गल खेती गरिने ठाँउहरुमा पाईने एक मझौला आकारको काँडादार पतझड भएको

    रूख हो। यसको उचाइ लगभग देखि १५ मिटरसम्म हुन्छ। यसको बोक्रा खैरो कडा हुन्छ भने पातहरू देखि पत्रको हुन्छन्। पातहरू सुगन्धित हुन्छन् प्रत्येक पत्र अण्डाकार आकारको दाँती परेको हुन्छ। बेलको फूल चैतदेखि वैशाखसम्म फुल्छ, फल वैशाखदेखि असारसम्म लाग्छ।

    उपलब्धता:

    बेल नेपालभरि ११०० मिटर उचाइसम्म पाइन्छ। तर विशेषगरी चुरे क्षेत्र, चुरेको दक्षिणी भाग, मध्य-पश्चिम नेपालका पहाडी जिल्लाहरूमा बेल धेरै पाईन्छ।

    सङ्कलन समय: बेलको फल साउनदेखि भदौसम्ममा सङ्कलन गरिन्छ।

    प्रयोग गुणहरू:

    बेलको फल स्वास्थ्यका लागि अत्यन्तै लाभदायक हुन्छ। यसको पाकेको फलबाट जुस तयार पार्न सकिन्छ, जुन गर्मीमा शीतल पेयको रूपमा प्रयोग गरिन्छ। बेलको पातको रसले पेटको रोगहरू, मधुमेह, पिसाब पोल्ने रोगहरूलाई कम गर्न मद्दत गर्छ।

    नेवार समुदायमा परम्परागत रूपमा छोरीहरूको पहिलो विवाह बेलको फलसँग गरिदिने चलन छ। साथै, बेलको फल झाडापखाला, कब्जियत, ज्वरो जस्ता समस्याहरूको समाधानमा पनि प्रयोग गरिन्छ। यसको गुदी चपाउने गमको रूपमा प्रयोग गर्न सकिन्छ भने जराको रसले ज्वरो बान्ता कम गर्न मद्दत गर्छ।

    संरक्षण अवस्था:

    नेपाल सरकारले बेलको खेती संरक्षणलाई प्राथमिकता दिएको किनकि यो बोट पर्यावरणीय दृष्टिले महत्त्वपूर्ण औषधीय गुणहरूका कारण यसको व्यवसायिक महत्त्व पनि छ।

     

     

    Introduction:

    The Bael fruit tree, commonly called the Wood Apple, is a medium-sized thorny tree that grows to a height of 8 to 15 meters. It is deciduous; thus, it sheds its leaves seasonally. The bark is brown and scaly, while the leaves are aromatic, trifoliate-the leaflets being approximately 4-6 cm long each. The flowers are greenish white in colour appearing from April to June followed by fruit from April to July next year.

    Availability:

    Bael trees are distributed up to 1100 meters in Nepal. However it is more commons in the Chure, southern base of the Chure hills, and Lower hilly area of Mid-Western region of Nepal

    Harvesting Time:

    The best collection time of the fruit is during the period between August and September when the fruit is fully ripe. Description of Traded Part:

    Bael fruit is hard and has a coconut-like texture. It varies in color, being green when raw and turning to a purplish-brown rough color when it ripens. Inside, the flesh is bright yellow with a sweet-sour taste. The raw fruit is usually bitter and astringent, although the ripe fruit is delicious and refreshing.

     

    Uses, Properties, and Benefits:

    It is a very healthy fruit. In Nepal, the fruit is consumed mainly as juice. The juice is said to be cold in nature and hence ideal during the hot summer season. The pulp of the ripe fruit will cure digestion problems, piles, and throat pain. Sometimes, the gum of the fruit is used as a glue.

    These leaves are utilized for treating a number of ailments, which include stomach problems, diabetes, and infection of the urinary tract. The extracted juice from these leaves also serves as an insecticide. Traditionally, the Bael fruit has been used in Nepali medicine, especially for digestive disorders like diarrhea, dysentery, and colds.

    This tree also has cultural importance among the Newars, wherein the fruit of the Bael tree is considered to be a marriage substitute before the actual marriage of the girl.

    Its root is also highly medicinal. They taste sweet but are bitter and help in treating fever, dysentery, and nausea. Because of its multi-purpose features, the Bael tree becomes very commercially important in Nepal.

    Conservation Status:

    The government of Nepal, while considering its medicinal and ecological importance, has prioritized it for cultivation and conservation. The tree is adapted to dry environments and thus very crucial in terms of health benefits toward the sustainable agricultural practices of Nepal.

    Methods of Using Bael:

    1. Bael Juice: The most important use of the Bael fruit is that of preparing juice. The pulp inside the ripe fruit is scooped out and mixed with water and sometimes sugar to make a refreshing healthy drink. This juice is highly rich in vitamins and helps boost digestion.

    2. Leaf Juice: Crushed leaves yield juice, which is used in stomach pains, diabetes, and even as mosquito repellents.

    3. Fresh Eating: The pulp of the ripe fruit can be consumed fresh as a snack mainly for persons suffering from constipation. This pulp is appealing in taste, sweet and sour, soothing to the digestive system.

    4. Traditional Medicine: In Ayurveda, the roots and leaves of Bael are given in several forms as a medication for fevers, nausea, and digestive disorders like dysentery; very often, these are boiled to make medicinal decoctions.

    Various usages of Bael, starting from cultural to medical aspects, render it a quintessential plant in Nepali homes and a traditional herb. Being one of the key "herbs in Nepal," its' importance cannot be emphasized enough. Be it culturally through all rituals or using it for certain day-to-day health treatments, Bael forms an important part of Nepalese life and heritage.
