Introduction:
Bishfej, also known as the Wall Fern, is a perennial herb
found only in Nepal. The scientific name of this plant is Polypodium vulgare
L., and it belongs to the family Polypodiaceae. It is terrestrial or
epiphytic-a fern that either grows on the ground or is capable of attaching
itself to trees. Bishfej contains a creeping rhizome covered with brown linear
scales. Its fronds or leaves grow between 30 to 65 cm long and 8 to 15 cm wide.
The upper surface of these leaves is smooth, while the lower side has fine
hairs with brown reproductive structures called sori. It grows well in damp,
shady areas of north slopes.
Availability in Nepal:
Bishfej is found all over Nepal, from 1300 to 2700 meters in
altitude. It thrives in cool shady places; hence, the north-facing slopes are
very suitable for it. Generally found in forests and hilly areas where moisture
is sufficient.
Time of Collection and Parts Used:
The rhizome of Bishfej is modified for stem lying underground
and used as medicine. Collection: It is collected in the month of September and
October. After harvest, the rhizome is brown coloured, woody in nature with
small brown scales. The dried rhizome is about 0.5 cm thick and 3 to 8 cm long.
Uses and Benefits:
Bishfej has been utilized in folk remedies for a very long
period of time due to its curing effects. Among the most popular applications
of the herb, the following can be pointed out: back pain relief. The powdered
rhizome is mixed with corn flour roasted and taken three times per day about 8
teaspoons per dose. Such a mixture is considered to reduce backaches and soothe
other body pains. Moreover, Bishfej keeps stomach problems away, aiding
digestion and dispelling discomforts. Its natural healing properties make it an
indispensable herb in herbal remedies among the Nepali households.
Conservation Status:
It is widely available; however, its medicinal uses have
brought this herb into importance in Nepal's herbal trade. But overharvesting
for commercial purposes threatens its wild availability; hence, sustainable
harvesting practices are encouraged.
Method of Use:
In using Bishfej, the rhizome is dried and then ground into
a fine powder. The powder is often mixed with corn flour and roasted. The
roasted mixture may be taken as a remedy for backaches and stomach issues. In
traditional medicine, about 8 teaspoons of this mixture are consumed three
times a day for effective results.
