3. नाक र घाँटीका

Introduction
Somlata, scientifically known as Ephedra gerardiana Wall. ex
Stapf, is a perennial shrub which grows up to 60 cm tall. The shrub has a
number of stiff and spreading branches, bearing nodes on the branches. The
internodal distance between two nodes is approximately 4 cm. Somlata flowers
from June to August and bears fruit from August to October. A peculiar
character found in this plant is the sourness of the stems and the sweetness of
the red fruits.
Availability
Somlata grows in dry and sloping regions from 2500 to 5000
meters. It dominantly grows in the hilly areas of the Himalayas.
Part Used in Trade
The traded parts are the branches.
Harvesting Time
It follows, therefore, that the collection time should be
around November to December of each year because it is in these months that its
bioactive chemical components are most concentrated.
Uses
The fresh, thin branches of Somlata, upon drying, are used
as treatment for the following diseases:
Sinusitis: Somlata is beneficial as a sinusitis treatment
because it decongests and ventilates the nasal passages.
Asthma: This herb is considered advantageous for individuals
suffering from asthma. It helps ease breathing difficulties by relaxing the
airways.
Nose and Neck Related Diseases: Somlata is effective in
providing relief from various issues related to the nose and throat.
Epilepsy: It is also used in the treatment of epilepsy, helping manage
seizure frequency.
Diuretic: Somlata is a kind of diuretic that increases the
flow of urine, hence helping to eliminate all the toxins of the body.

as it lessens the histamine reaction.
