सुगन्धकोकिला, वैज्ञानिक नाम Cinnamomum glaucescens (Nees) Hand. Mazz., लौरासी परिवारको सदस्य हो। यो मध्यम आकारको सदावहार रूख १५ देखि २० मिटर अग्लो हुन सक्छ नेपालमा यसलाई

    मालागेडी, तेलकाउलो मालागिरी जस्ता विभिन्न नामले चिनिन्छ। यसको विशेष गन्ध भएको फलले सुगन्धकोकिलालाई स्थानीय पारिस्थितिकी परम्परागत अभ्यासको अभिन्न भाग बनाएको छ।

    उपलब्धता वितरण

    सुगन्धकोकिला ,००० देखि ,५०० मिटरको उचाइमा पाइन्छ, विशेषगरी नेपालका मध्य पश्चिमका जिल्लाहरूमा। यो रूख रोल्पा, दाङ, प्युठान, सल्यान रुकुम जस्ता क्षेत्रमा प्रचुर मात्रामा पाइन्छ। यो प्रायः साल, चिउरी, hododendron अन्य जंगली रूखहरूसँगको जंगलमा उब्जने गर्दछ पानीका स्रोत, खोला खोल्सी नजिकका चट्टानी भिरालो स्थानमा फल्ने गर्छ।

    कटानको समय व्यापारमा प्रयोग हुने भाग

    सुगन्धकोकिलाको कटान प्रायः अक्टोबरदेखि नोभेम्बर बीचमा गरिन्छ। व्यापारमा प्रयोग हुने मुख्य भाग यसको फल हो, जुन सुगन्धित कालो रंगको हुन्छ। जब यो पूर्ण रूपमा सुक्छ, फल झुर्रिएको, गुच्चा जत्रो गोलाकार देखिन्छ, यसको बीउको रंग पहेँलो खैरो हुन्छ।

    प्रयोग, विशेषताहरू फाइदाहरू

    सुगन्धकोकिलाको विभिन्न प्रयोग फाइदाहरू निम्नलिखित छन्:

    1.            अवश्यक तेल उत्पादन:

    o             सुगन्धकोकिलाको फलबाट निकालिएको आवश्यक तेल सौन्दर्य उद्योगमा अत्यधिक मूल्यवान छ। यसको सुगन्ध जीवाणुरोधी विशेषताहरूले यसलाई सुगन्धित चिजहरू साबुनहरूमा उत्कृष्ट बनाउँछ।

    o             आवश्यक तेलको उत्पादन पछि बाँकी रहेका पदार्थहरू धूपको ढाँचा बनाउन प्रयोग गरिन्छ, जुन धार्मिक चिकित्सकीय अभ्यासमा प्रचलित छ।

    2.            परम्परागत चिकित्सा:

    o             ग्रामीण क्षेत्रमा, सुगन्धकोकिलाको बीउलाई विभिन्न रोगहरूको उपचारका लागि प्रयोग गरिन्छ। बीउको पेस्ट सुन्निएका अंगहरूमा लगाइन्छ।

    o             यो सामान्य ज्वरो, पेटका कीरा दाँतको दुखाइमा प्रयोग गरिन्छ, जसले यसको परम्परागत औषधि रूपमा महत्त्वलाई दर्शाउँछ।

                 धूप उत्पादन: आवश्यक तेलको उत्पादनपछि बाँकी रहेका पदार्थहरूलाई बाँध्ने सामग्रीहरूसँग मिलाएर धूपको छडी बनाउन प्रयोग गरिन्छ।

                 सामान्य ज्वरो: बीउलाई चियामा प्रयोग गरेर यो ज्वरोका लक्षणहरूमा राहत दिन सक्छ।

                 पेटका समस्या: पेटका कीरा हराउनेतर्फ बीउको पेस्ट प्रयोग गरिन्छ।

                 सुनो दुखाइ: बीउको टोपामा लगाएर सूजन दुखाइमा राहत दिन सक्छ।

    नेपाल सरकारले सुगन्धकोकिलालाई पारिस्थितिकीय आर्थिक महत्त्वका कारण संरक्षण खेतीका लागि प्राथमिकता दिएको छ। यसका साथै, यसले प्रक्रियाबिना विदेशी निर्यात गर्न प्रतिबन्ध लगाएको , जसले यसलाई दिगो प्रयोग अत्यधिक कटानबाट जोगाउन मद्दत गर्दछ।

    Introduction

    Sugandhakokila, scientifically known as Cinnamomum glaucescens (Nees) Hand. Mazz., falls under the family Lauraceae. This medium-sized evergreen tree grows up to 15 to 20 meters tall and is variously known as Malagedi, Telkaulo, and Malagiri among other names in Nepal. The peculiar character of this plant is its fragrant fruit; it is becoming an integral part of the local ecology and tradition in areas where the species predominates.

     

    Distribution in Nepal and its Availability

    It grows well in the altitude from 1,000 to 2,500 meters above sea level and is generally distributed throughout the central and western districts of Nepal. The highest population has been recorded in the districts of Rolpa, Dang, Pyuthan, Salyan, and Rukum, and it grows in forests together with other species like Shorea robusta, Pinus, and Rhododendron. It prefers rocky, sloppy ground near rivers, streams, and water sources and therefore shows adaptability for a wide range of habitats.

     

    Harvesting Time and Parts Used in Trade

    The harvesting of Sugandhakokila occurs annually during the months of October and November. The fruit is the only part involved in trade, and indeed, it has a very strong aroma. The fruit is globose and green when unripe, but turns to black upon maturity. When the fruit is completely dried, it becomes wrinkled, marble-sized, and oval-shaped, as the seeds turn to brownish-yellow.

     

    Uses, Properties, and Benefits

    The Sugandhakokila is quite famous because of its many uses, mainly derived from the essential oil produced from its fruit. The essential oil produced from the fruit enjoys widespread usage in the manufacture of beauty products such as perfumes and soaps because it has a fragrant quality. Here are the most noted uses and advantages: Essential Oil Production:

     

    This makes the fruit of the Sugandhakokila plant highly prized within the cosmetic industry. Its fragrance is sweet, and for this particular reason, it is one of the finest ingredients employed in perfumes and soaps on account of its antimicrobial properties.

    The residuals obtained after extraction of the essential oil have their application in the making of incense sticks. These are used not only within religious circles but also during therapeutic procedures.

    Traditional Medicine:

     

    Traditionally, the seeds of Sugandhakokila have been used in rural areas against a wide range of ailments. The seed paste can be applied on the swollen parts of the body to reduce the inflammation.

    It is also used in common cold, intestinal worm, and toothache, which shows its importance in traditional herbal medicine.

    It is said that the wood of Sugandhakokila is the alternative for the medicinal herb syasfras found in the USA, which increases its applicability not only in herbal medicine but also in woodcraft.

    Culinary Uses:

     

    In some cultures, its fruits' aroma could be used in cooking or as flavoring; however, this is less common when compared with its medicinal and cosmetic uses.

    Methods of Use

    The use of Sugandhakokila depends on the site of application:

     

    Essential Oils: Cosmetically, essential oil is generally used dilution and applied in the production of beauty products .

    Seed Paste: A paste prepared from the seeds is used to apply locally on swellings and minor ailments.

    Incense Productivity: The unused materials left after producing oil are mixed with binding agents to produce incense sticks which will be dried and sold in market places.

    Treatment for Diseases

    The following is the usefulness of Sugandhakokila against common health problems:

     

    Common Cold: The seeds can be used as an herbal infusion to treat cold symptoms.

    Digestive Problems: Seed paste is taken orally or applied on the abdomen in cases of stomach worms.

    Inflammation and Pain: Application of seed paste on affected areas alleviates swelling and pain.

    Conservation Status

    The ecological and economic importance of Sugandhakokila has been recognized by the Government of Nepal, hence it has been prioritized for cultivation and conservation. The export of this species is banned by the government of Nepal without proper processing to ensure its sustainable use and to prevent over-harvesting.
