Introduction
Sugandhakokila, scientifically known as Cinnamomum
glaucescens (Nees) Hand. Mazz., falls under the family Lauraceae. This
medium-sized evergreen tree grows up to 15 to 20 meters tall and is variously
known as Malagedi, Telkaulo, and Malagiri among other names in Nepal. The
peculiar character of this plant is its fragrant fruit; it is becoming an
integral part of the local ecology and tradition in areas where the species
predominates.
Distribution in Nepal and its Availability
It grows well in the altitude from 1,000 to 2,500 meters
above sea level and is generally distributed throughout the central and western
districts of Nepal. The highest population has been recorded in the districts
of Rolpa, Dang, Pyuthan, Salyan, and Rukum, and it grows in forests together
with other species like Shorea robusta, Pinus, and Rhododendron. It prefers
rocky, sloppy ground near rivers, streams, and water sources and therefore
shows adaptability for a wide range of habitats.
Harvesting Time and Parts Used in Trade
The harvesting of Sugandhakokila occurs annually during the
months of October and November. The fruit is the only part involved in trade,
and indeed, it has a very strong aroma. The fruit is globose and green when
unripe, but turns to black upon maturity. When the fruit is completely dried,
it becomes wrinkled, marble-sized, and oval-shaped, as the seeds turn to
brownish-yellow.
Uses, Properties, and Benefits
The Sugandhakokila is quite famous because of its many uses,
mainly derived from the essential oil produced from its fruit. The essential
oil produced from the fruit enjoys widespread usage in the manufacture of
beauty products such as perfumes and soaps because it has a fragrant quality.
Here are the most noted uses and advantages: Essential Oil Production:
This makes the fruit of the Sugandhakokila plant highly
prized within the cosmetic industry. Its fragrance is sweet, and for this
particular reason, it is one of the finest ingredients employed in perfumes and
soaps on account of its antimicrobial properties.
The residuals obtained after extraction of the essential oil
have their application in the making of incense sticks. These are used not only
within religious circles but also during therapeutic procedures.
Traditional Medicine:
Traditionally, the seeds of Sugandhakokila have been used in
rural areas against a wide range of ailments. The seed paste can be applied on
the swollen parts of the body to reduce the inflammation.
It is also used in common cold, intestinal worm, and
toothache, which shows its importance in traditional herbal medicine.
Alternative to Other Medicinal Woods:
It is said that the wood of Sugandhakokila is the
alternative for the medicinal herb syasfras found in the USA, which increases
its applicability not only in herbal medicine but also in woodcraft.
Culinary Uses:
In some cultures, its fruits' aroma could be used in cooking
or as flavoring; however, this is less common when compared with its medicinal
and cosmetic uses.
Methods of Use
The use of Sugandhakokila depends on the site of application:
Essential Oils: Cosmetically, essential oil is generally
used dilution and applied in the production of beauty products .
Seed Paste: A paste prepared from the seeds is used to apply
locally on swellings and minor ailments.
Incense Productivity: The unused materials left after
producing oil are mixed with binding agents to produce incense sticks which
will be dried and sold in market places.
Treatment for Diseases

common health problems:
Common Cold: The seeds can be used as an herbal infusion to
treat cold symptoms.

areas alleviates swelling and pain.
Conservation Status
The ecological and economic importance of Sugandhakokila has
been recognized by the Government of Nepal, hence it has been prioritized for
cultivation and conservation. The export of this species is banned by the
government of Nepal without proper processing to ensure its sustainable use and
to prevent over-harvesting.
Conclusion
It is a standing example of biodiversity prevalent in Nepal
and how it relates directly to its local community. Given the multi-faceted
uses for beauty products, traditional medicine, and culinary applications, it
is an integral element of the herbal heritage of Nepal. As the process of
conservation goes on, Sugandhakokila may thrive and stay as an indispensable
entity in terms of ecological balance and customary practices in the regions
