sticky sap." The bitter taste and its cooling properties are crucial
aspects of its medicinal profile. The plant’s properties can be summarized as
follows:
- Bitter:
It has a distinctly bitter flavor that makes it effective in treating
various disorders related to excess heat and toxicity in the body.
- Cooling
(Shitaveerya): Its cooling nature is helpful in conditions where
internal heat needs to be alleviated, such as in cases of inflammation or
high fever.
- Astringent
(Grāhī): This quality helps in stopping bleeding, tightening tissues,
and promoting tissue regeneration.
- Nutrient-Rich
(Pushtikārak): The herb is known to be nourishing, providing strength
and vitality to the body, especially in individuals with weakness or those
recovering from illness.
Advantages:
The traditional use of KaaDhe Sallo brings multiple health
benefits, particularly in managing imbalances in the body. Some of its key
advantages include:
- Digestive

indigestion, loss of appetite, and other gastrointestinal disturbances.
The bitterness of the herb stimulates digestive juices, promoting better
digestion.
- Respiratory
Health: It is commonly used in the treatment of respiratory ailments,
particularly in cases of excessive mucus (kaf) or other conditions related
to the lungs.
- Blood
Disorders: The red resin produced by the tree is beneficial in
purifying the blood, making it effective for conditions like blood
disorders, excessive heat in the blood (raktapitta), and diarrhea
(atisar).

KaaDhe Sallo help reduce inflammation and speed up healing, especially for
conditions related to the skin, wounds, and internal organs.
- Pain

hemorrhoids (arsh), and other pains associated with blood circulation and
excess heat in the body.

KaaDhe Sallo has a
wide range of uses in traditional medicine, both internally and externally.
Here are some common uses:
- Internal
Use:
- KaaDhe
Sallo Powder (Churn or Leedo): The powder form is often consumed to
treat blood disorders, digestive problems, and respiratory ailments. The
typical dosage is around 3-5 grams per day, depending on the severity of
the condition.
- Extract
or Juice: The extract or juice of the tree is used to address
conditions like diarrhea (atisar), blood disorders (raktapitta), and
excessive phlegm (kaf). It is taken in doses of 10-15 grams, two to three
times a day.

Using Method:
To maximize the benefits of KaaDhe Sallo, the following
methods can be employed:
- Powder
(Churn or Leedo):
- Take
3-5 grams of the powder with water or honey. It is typically consumed in
the morning or after meals. It can be used for digestive disorders or
blood purification.
- Extract:
- The
extract can be prepared by boiling the resinous substance with water.
10-15 grams of the extract can be consumed 2-3 times a day to treat
respiratory issues or blood disorders.

resinous sap is carefully collected and directly applied to wounds,
boils, or hemorrhoids. The sap’s cooling and astringent properties help
reduce inflammation and promote faster healing.
Harvesting Method:
KaaDhe Sallo is typically harvested for its red resin, which
is carefully collected from the tree. Harvesting is done during the rainy
season when the tree produces the sap in abundance. The steps for harvesting
include:
- Collection
of Resin: The resin is collected from the bark of the tree by making
small incisions. The red sap oozes out from these cuts and is gathered in
clean containers. Care must be taken to avoid damaging the tree
excessively, as over-harvesting can weaken the tree and reduce its future
productivity.
- Processing:
Once collected, the resin is either used fresh or dried and ground into
powder. The dried resin is preferred for long-term storage and use, as it
can be more concentrated and potent.
- Sustainability:
Sustainable harvesting methods should be practiced to ensure that the tree
population is not depleted. Careful management of the tree's resources is
essential for maintaining the availability of KaaDhe Sallo for future
generations.
Conclusion:
KaaDhe Sallo (Araucaria
bidwillii) stands out as an important medicinal plant with various health
benefits. Its bitter, cooling, and astringent properties make it a valuable
herb for treating a range of disorders, including digestive issues, blood
disorders, respiratory problems, and inflammation. With careful harvesting and
proper utilization, this herb can be an effective natural remedy in both modern
and traditional medicine.
Its potential to treat a variety of ailments, particularly in the digestive and circulatory systems, has earned it a revered place in Nepali folk medicine.
